We bring every industrial environment to life. – that’s our vision when we talk about our technology. What’s behind it?
One of the most crucial aspects of life and survival is our ability to perceive our environment through our senses. Sight, in particular, is our primary sense. Technically speaking, the eye is the only broadband channel through which information from the external world reaches our natural computer – the brain. Processing this information allows us to perceive our surroundings, understand situations in context, and carry out targeted actions.
Our perception not only enables our daily survival in an unpredictable world but also forms the foundation for another essential aspect of life: continuous learning of new skills. When learning, we attempt actions aimed at achieving specific goals. Through perception, we assess whether the outcome aligns with the desired target. By continuously comparing results to the goal, we adapt our actions, improve our abilities, and acquire new ones.
When developing Sentics technology, we drew inspiration from nature. The idea is to provide industrial environments with perception, effectively bringing them to life, as our vision suggests. Visual information is captured by cameras.
Unlike humans, who perceive their immediate surroundings from a first-person perspective, an environment must be perceived uniformly across a large area. To achieve this, multiple cameras are strategically placed throughout the infrastructure, ensuring redundant visual coverage of the entire industrial environment. These camera streams are then processed in real-time by a central server, akin to how the brain processes sensory input. Computer vision and AI models identify and locate objects – such as people, vehicles, machinery, and equipment – in the environment.
The resulting digital twin serves as the foundation for understanding process context and deriving actionable insights using additional AI models and rule-based algorithms. This process resembles how a person anticipates situations based on learned knowledge and experiences.
Following nature’s example, Sentics bestows artificial perception upon industrial environments, enabling real-time anticipation of situations and autonomous decision-making. Hence the brand name we introduced for our technology: Aeper – Artificial Environmental Perception.
The economic and social potentials here are enormous. By early detection of accident risks and active intervention (e.g., braking vehicles to prevent collisions with humans), the thousands of accidents in the industry can be avoided - a significant step toward Mission Zero! Another example is the efficient operation of autonomous transport vehicles. Through comprehensive information about the condition of driving areas, fleet operations can be optimized or, in most cases, efficiently introduced in the first place. Sentics is the first company to commercially offer safety and efficiency products based on Aeper.
Additionally, some major tech companies also demonstrate the significant transformative potentials of Aeper technology through their own developments.
Our partner NVIDIA showcases a virtual simulation in a blog post, illustrating the operation of autonomous vehicles in a logistics environment:
